He was a model to me of artistic labor and discipline, even if those early paintings were painfully amateurish. The painting followed me from Amherst to my first job in New York, and on to London and Delhi. IT WASN’T MY intention to start an essay about artistic beginnings with a story of artistic death. I’m especially moved by those first moments of validation by which an artist comes out to himself, as it were. It’s this, the inexorability of the correspondence between an artist and the world, that gives those first steps their magical quality.

He was a model to me of artistic labor and discipline, even if those early paintings were painfully amateurish. IT WASN’T MY intention to start an essay about artistic beginnings with a story of artistic death. No one captured the massive cultural and economic disparities of my life in Delhi (and his in Lahore) like Toor. But quite unbeknown to me, Toor’s life in New York had opened up a new vein of material. Not everyone who sees a Michelangelo can go off and paint a Michelangelo.”THERE ARE SO many ways to begin.

CNN —The 2023 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to Jon Fosse for “his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable,” the Swedish Academy announced in Stockholm on Thursday. His work consists of around 40 plays, as well as a number of novels, poetry, essays, children’s books and translations. The committee lauded the author’s style, which has come to be known as “Fosse minimalism.”“Fosse presents everyday situations that are instantly recognizable in our own lives. But making it more popular than Twitter would be a big win for Mark Zuckerberg. Most Twitter users know that the platform comes alive during a breaking news event, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Those paying average Joes are now prioritized in the feed, devaluing Twitter as a place to discover interesting people. A recurring theme on Threads: It's a nice place to hang out (for now...) Insider/Shona Ghosh/ThreadsThat niceness could be fragile and temporary. Threads may go the same way since, as the internet loves to say, we can't have nice things.

Alfred Hitchcock once told François Truffaut he wanted to make a film that would examine a city entirely through food and, unusually, waste. He would show the arrival of meat and produce into a metropolis, “its distribution, the selling, how it’s fixed up and absorbed. “Dish and pot, dish and pot, these are the poles,” his narrator says in “Malone Dies.” The dish, we discuss freely: Food, in literature and elsewhere, is part of what we talk about when we talk about culture. They are life, as much as sex is life — maybe more so, because people’s sex lives dwindle but this need does not. There is no defecatory equivalent of the inoffensive, neutral ‘sex.’” But we will do our best.

So what does the rest of the year have in store for Wall Street? Unfortunately, Wall Street is unlikely to receive the clarity it seeks anytime soon. Still, economists at the Federal Reserve believe that a recession seems more likely by the end of 2023 than not. AI boom: Wall Street has a lot to worry about, but there’s at least one source of market euphoria: artificial intelligence. Satisfying your sweet tooth is about to get more expensiveIf you have a sweet tooth, take note: Cocoa prices have been soaring — and that could drive chocolate prices higher.

The Cherry Lane Theatre was put back on the market in 2021 after a previous sale fell through. The purchase comes as Hollywood increasingly looks to the theater world for IP and talent. A24, the Oscar-winning studio behind indie hits like "Uncut Gems," "Midsommar," and "Moonlight," is in talks to buy the Cherry Lane Theatre, New York City's oldest continuously running off-Broadway theater, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Cherry Lane was put back on the market in November 2021 after a deal to buy the theater for $11 million fell through amid disagreements over the price. Representatives from the Cherry Lane Theatre and A24 declined to comment on any prospective sale.
